    Vol. 1 No. 1 (2019)

Welcome to the inaugural publication of ENGAGE! IUPUI’s first journal dedicated to community-engaged and community-based participatory research. IUPUI is recognized locally, nationally, and internationally as an urban-serving research and health sciences university. This issue is dedicated to celebrating the campus’ 50th anniversary and recognizing its decades of public facing scholarship.

Community-engaged research (CER) in city settings is focused on the processes and results of inquiry-focused relationships between community partners and representatives of the university. Guiding principles of social justice, mutuality, and reciprocity are practiced through dialogue, co-learning, and long-term commitments to participation. In the urban setting, community-engaged research is attentive to the rich diversity of cultures and languages as well as poverty and wealth; to privilege and marginalization. CER practices are equity-driven and intentionally change-oriented. This means acknowledging issues of power and the critical importance of cultural humility.

In our third issue of ENGAGE!, Indiana University's first academic journal focused on community-engaged research, we stress the critical importance of  community engaged research focused on racism and the significant impacts on our communities and neighbors.   "We hope you gain a deeper appreciation and base of knowledge about peace through this issue of ENGAGE! from people who have devoted their lives to making our world a better place. Know that it only takes one person to begin the peacemaking process.  You do not have to wait for a peacemaker. Become a peacemaker creating a better world for everyone."  -- ENGAGE! The creative and communal power of the arts as a tool for fostering community, empowerment, and positive social transformation are highlighted in this June, 2022 issue of ENGAGE!. The arts may speak to the inner spirit, as well as allowing the outward demonstration of the entire range and diversity of human emotions. Our imaginations can be fired up and get our creative engines moving. As the guest editor for this issue so plainly states: paths may open that help us “find common ground.”
